Heavyweight Donovan "Razor" Ruddock caught the attention of the boxing world in the early 1990s with a devastating knockout of Michael Dokes and then two competitive and very exciting losses to Mike Tyson. Now 51 years old, Ruddock hit the comeback trail earlier this year. After almost 14 years away from the ring, Ruddock has defeated two opponents with decent records (Raymond Olubowale and Eric Barrak), but it still battling to convince the critics that he still has his old power. Comeback fight number three is scheduled for September 11th against an opponent who has won three straight. Click below for Boxingtalk's interview with Ruddock, including the name of Ruddock's foe.
Ivan Montiel: I see you're fighting Sept 11th in Toronto on the Adonis Stevenson undercard. You are scheduled to face against Dillon “Big Country” Carman (8-2 with 7 KOs). Carman is the Canadian heavyweight champion. He's won three in a row and is 29 years old. Have you noticed any weakness in Carman?
Razor Ruddock: I’d rather not say much regarding Dillon’s weakness. I’d rather keep it to myself. I have a game plan, to be in top condition. I believe everything flows off the condition that I will be in.
IM: You definitely look like you are in better condition than the last time we spoke. You mentioned you are looking for a title, the heavyweight title. I notice you’ve kept your word by keeping busy at the gym.RR: Yes I am keeping my word. I always say what I mean. I am not the type to talk to talk.
IM: You’ve been busy fighting steadily [This will be your third fight of 2015].RR: Yes my most recent opponent in Montreal, Quebec was Eric Barrak. Prior to Barrak I fought Raymond Olubowale whom I stopped in the 5th round.
IM: Olubowale was younger and bigger than you.RR: Yes Raymond Olubowale was younger indeed but it’s not about age, it’s about conditioning, experience and punching power.
IM: You most definitely have the experience having fought the best of the best in your era. You have the power and now looking in better shape even at 51 years old.RR: I hate to believe that I am old. Being "finished"-- that’s something I will not accept.
IM: So you want to prove the naysayers wrong.
RR: Yes definitely most definitely! I don’t listen to those negative people. I am not in their world. I am in my own path! I am focused!
IM: Assuming you get passed Dillon Carman, who’s next?RR: It would have to be someone in the top ten. I try not to look ahead right now my focus is on Dillon Carman. This will be my third fight this year. I am keeping busy like back in the days when I was fighting three times a year. I am trying to keep that consistency of fighting steady all my life.
IM: I take it this will be your last fight of 2015?RR: No I will try to sneak in one more fight before the end of this year. The more I fight, the more seasoned I become, the better I get at it.
IM: That’s great! The more we get to see you fight the better! You are always and have always been an exciting fighter. We wish you all the best for Sept 11th. E
