Prospect Watch: Fernando Guerrero

Boxingtalk was ringside for the pro debut of middleweight prospect, Fernando Guerrero, who had a stellar amateur background capped by a trip to the Olympic Trials. On Saturday, he showed why Prize Fight signed him by winning his pro debut against Derrick Douglas via a second-round technical knockout.

BT – Fernando, The Peterson brothers are here, and they are busting your chops a little bit (laughs).

Fernando Guerrero – Yeah, they are telling me that I busted my cherry tonight (laughs).  I started off a little bit tight, but I got used to and I got the job done.

BT – Were you a little nervous being this was your pro debut, and it was in front of a sold out crowd?

FG – Well It was that I was new as a pro in the ring, and it was unexplored territory as a pro.

BT – How would you assess your performance for your first pro fight?

FG – It was OK, but I can do way better and I am ready for my next fight.

BT – Did your opponent bring anything into the ring that caught you by surprise?

FG – Well overall he was just an awkward and wild fighter.  It threw me off of my game a little bit, but I handled it, and made the adjustments needed in order to get the win.

BT – You are trained by Hal Chernoff as well as one of the best trainers in the country, Barry Hunter.  Talk about what Barry Hunter brings to you.

FG – Well he's the man, and that's why I am with him.  I just want to shine for him, because he makes everybody shine.

BT – When do you want to fight again?

FG – As soon as possible, tomorrow? (laughs).

BT – (Laughs), it's not like you broke a big sweat tonight.

FG – No, not tonight I didn't.

BT – I know you just got out of the ring, so I won't keep you too long.  Do you have any closing thoughts for the Boxingtalk fans?

FG – I am just glad that I turned pro, and I am loving it.  It's the beginning of my career, and I just want to say, look out!
