Bantamweight contender Yonnhy Perez and trainer Danny Zamora sat down with Boxing Talk in the aftermath of Perez's win over Alexander Fedorov Friday night on Shobox. The unbeaten Perez, 14-0(10), scored an impressive fourth round TKO of Federov in his national television debut. Read on to get Yohnny's thoughts on the bout and his current streak of 4 straight wins by stoppage.
BT: What are your thoughts on the fight?
YP: (Danny Zamora translating) It was a great test for me. This fight showed me I need to work a little more harder. There's things I need to work on. This is what I came for. You can't eat it-to come out on Showtime and win on a fourth round knockout.
BT: It didn't take you long to figure out his style. The second round it looked like you started to land with the hook and the right hand.
YP: The first round I was kinda shocked. (In) the video that we've seen, the guy was coming forward. After the first round, I came back to the corner and received my instructions. From there, we knew what we had to do. That jab and that hook was gonna land.
BT: Did you feel any extra pressure to go out and give a good performance with it being your national TV debut?
YP: I took this fight just like any other fight. I knew I had to come in, do my job. That's what I train for. There's no easy fight, no pressure fight. All the fights are pressure-you never know what could happen. I train as hard.
BT: You've stopped 4 opponents in a row. Are you doing anything differently now? Has it taken you a while to adjust to the professional style?
YP: No, it's the same training. I come in, train to fight the rounds I have to go. If I see I can capitalize and finish the fighter off, the better it is so I don't hurt myself and we prepare ourselves for the next fight.
BT: Any thoughts Danny?
DZ: 14 fights-we're on Showtime. What more can we expect? It's great we're on national TV. I think we seen some things we need to work on. We're here to fight anybody. Not being cocky, it's just being confident. At 118, he's strong. Even at 115-we could
make that weight if we had to. We're ranked at 118 so that's where we're gonna stay, but if something comes up we're ready. Another thing is we wanna thank our team-managers Mike Vital and Ismael Mares and our sponsors who help us out a lot in our training-Tequila de Oro de Jalisco and GMC (General Masonry Concrete).
