Philippine Update

FORMER two-time Philippine super-featherweight title challenger Renato Inal took only four minutes and eight seconds to depose of Jerry Sismondo in a scheduled 10-round non-title bout at the Elorde Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque City recently.

The heavier Inal staggered the taller Sismundo with a flurry of punches late in the opening round and continued the massacre in the next stanza to force referee Ferdie Estrella to stop the action at 1:08 of the second round.

The RP No. 7 ranked Inal, a 5-foot-3 fighter from Midsayap, North Cotabato of Paranaque City promoted by Johnny Elorde, was two-pounds heavier at 133 against the Mandaluyong-based Sismundo, who tipped the scale at 131.

The supporting bout was more merciless as southpaw Alvin Clereño, one of several prospects of Elorde, floored the game Romualdo Mahinay four times en route to a technical knockout win at 1:08 in the third of a scheduled 10 round super-featherweight clash.

Cleriño, a native of Surigao del Sur province, sent the Binangonan, Rizal-based Mahinay down twice in the first round with a quick left-right combination for the first time and a left hook in the second.

But the well-prepared Mahinay tried to fight back as he pressed the action. However, Mahinay’s over aggressiveness made him a prey to the countering and power-hitting Cleriño.

“Pumasok siya sa gusto kong laro,” Clereño told Boxingtalk a few minutes after he scored two knockdowns each in the third and fourth round, both by left hook, forcing the referee to save the glassy-eyed Mahinay from suffering an injury.

Clereño improved to a 10-1 win-loss record with seven victories coming by way of knockout.

In other results: super-bantam Elmer Pagaypan (Pasay City) knocked out Surigao del Sur native Rolando Espinosa (Parañaque City) with a left uppercut at 1:54 of the fourth in a scheduled eight round bout.

Samar’s Jose Bruce stopped Pasig City’s Elmer Saligumba at 1:53 in the first round of a scheduled featherweight 4-rounder. Quezon City’s Jerry Duaso annihilated Oliver Advincula of Eastern Samar at 1:40 of the 3rd.

Super-lightweight Rene Ramos (Paranaque City) and minimumweight Junjun Brocales (Albay) both scored unanimous decision wins over four rounds.

Ramos overpowered Gabriel Pardillo (Cubao, Quezon City) while Brocales edged Randy Francisco (Antipolo City).

The event, dubbed “Boxing Kontra Droga Part X” (Boxing Against Drugs Part 10), was promoted by Johnny Elorde of Johnny Elorde Management International in cooperation with Inner Wheel Club of Parañaque Sucat and Rotary Club of Parañaque Sucat.
