Peter not fighting in Super Fighter

The promoter and manager for heavyweight contender and “Nigerian Nightmare” Samuel Peter wish to publicly announce that, contrary to published reports, their fighter is NOT participating in the $5 million one-night Superfighter Tournament scheduled for December 1. “We have read recent media reports that the Superfighter Tournament representatives have announced Samuel Peter’s participation in December. We regret that the Super Fighter representatives have erroneously mentioned Samuel’s participation. It is not happening. We like the Superfighter organizers and think it’s an interesting concept, but Samuel is just not available to participate in December. Perhaps at a later date if the timing works,” said promoter Dino Duva of Duva Boxing.

Duva explains that Team Peter had looked into the idea, but has since moved on to their current mission: “Our only concern is for Samuel to knock out James Toney in their rematch and become the WBC mandatory heavyweight challenger.”

Manager Ivaylo Gotzev concurs with Duva’s assertions. “The minute the WBC announced the rematch with James Toney, we’ve been excited and working toward making that fight as soon as possible. The Superfighter Tournament is something that might be an interesting idea down the line, but they’re going to have to look for another fighter because Sam Peter is not available. Our team is excited about the opportunity to fight James Toney again. We want to prove something to the media and fans by closing the show early this time.”

According to Gotzev, an answer on the “where” and the “when” for the Peter/Toney rematch will soon be provided. “We haven’t been able to reach a deal with James Toney’s co-promoters, so we’re looking forward to a purse bid the WBC has ordered at their annual convention in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on the October 31,” he explained.
