Otis Griffin to fight for WBO title

The Fox Network should have called its failed boxing reality series “The Next Fake Champ.”  Although the series failed to generate significant ratings, today’s announcement of a “championship” bout for its December 3, 2004 demonstrates that the network is intent on duping the public.  The so-called championship bout that viewers were promised has finally materialized, and with the possible exception of Butterbean’s IBA four-round title, the Golden Boy promoted show will feature the most bogus title fight ever, which in boxing is really saying something.  Otis Griffin, the winner of The Next Great Champ, will fight for the “WBO eight-round lightweight title” against Alfonso Sanchez of Spain. Griffin has a 3-1-1 record.  Sanchez is 5-1-1, and except for his loss, he has only fought stiffs.  One of his wins came against a Romanian opponent who was 0-11 with 10 knockout losses.  The only good news for boxing fans is that there is no need to watch the show because ESPN (Rocky Juarez vs. Guty Espadas) and Telefutura (Alexander Munoz vs. Martin Castillo) will both show excellent matches on the same night
