One on One with Derrick Harmon

DF: What’s going on Derrick?  Who are you fighting next? "I don’t know, I’m fighting though on the May 14 under card of Trinidad and Wright. So right now I’m just waiting to see whom King puts in front of me. But no matter what I’m in good shape and I'll be ready for anybody come May 14.

DF: Who has been the toughest opponent in your career that you have faced?

Derrick Harmon:  Me without a doubt. I never maximized my full potential, you know the saying if you have a gift you better use it? Well I’m 35 years old now and if I would have lived by that saying I would have been Champion years ago.  I know a lot of boxers say things like that but believe me I’m coming back.  There were times in the past that I would end up having to lose 30 to 25 pounds to make weight. Totally abusing my body.

I was weighing at times 210 pounds.  I beat myself and therefore I am my toughest opponent. But I still have a lot of fight in me.  But I know now that I have to do different things to get different results.  You can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results.  No way.  Fighters out there doing what I did, not eating right and not taking care of themselves are expecting different results and that’s just not going to happen.

DF: Looking ahead whom are you looking for after May 14?

Derrick Harmon:  I don’t have anyone that far set on fighting but I did offer to fight George Jones who is 38 years old and He didn’t want the fight.  So you know I got on his ass for that.  Jones is 38 years old and he thinks a title shot is just going to fall in his lap.  No Brother, Your 38 years old you have to go out there and get it.  But right now I’m with Don King and I really think he is going to set me up with the fights that I need to get me where I want to be.  At my age I feel really good, I’m taking care of myself and trying to maximize what I have. Look at Glen Johnson. You can’t tell me your never to old and if you remember I beat him.

DF: Who’s the best fighter you ever saw?

Derrick Harmon: Pernell Whitaker but I'll tell you who the best Heavyweight is right now and its Hassim Rahman. I really think he's going to beat Klitschko. Rahman's a really good dude.

DF: What about James Toney vs. Rahman?

Derrick Harmon:  James has the skill but I know Rahman has the punch.  So we would have to wait and see.
