Super heavyweight: Alexander
Povetkin (Russia) walkover Mohamed Aly (Egypt) The Olympic boxing competition ended on an anticlimactic note when
Russia’s Alexander Povetkin was awarded the super heavyweight gold medal without having to throw a single punch.
Povetkin won Russia’s third boxing gold of the Athens games when Mohamed Aly of Egypt elected to retire with a hand
injury rather then take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to win a gold medal. There will be no more
comparisons to the great Muhammad Ali for the Egyptian silver medalist. The two men share a name but not the same
heart: Ali was a 1960 gold medalist under the name Cassius Clay who overcame mid-fight vision problems to defeat
Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title in 1964. Bronze medals: Roberto Camarelle (Italy), Michael Lopez (Cuba)
