Olympic Update: Russia Wins Featherweight Gold

Featherweight: Tichtchenko (Russia) defeats Kim (North Korea) Alexei Tichtchenko completed a remarkable comeback  to win Olympic gold in the featherweight division. The twenty year old Russian could easily have been eliminated in the round of 16 when he trailed an Azerbaijani opponent by ten points but advanced to the next round when the bout was stopped on cuts. After the reprieve, Tichtchenko won his next two bouts, including a win over the Galib jafarov, the reigning world champion, to move into the finals against Song Guk Kim of North Korea. Kim had a large advantage in  height and reach, but Tichtchenko got off to a very quick start and dominated Kim en route to a commanding 39-17 win. In the first two rounds, Kim spent too much time bouncing on his feet without throwing punches, and Tichtchenko took advantage by rushing in and landing scoring blows. Kim adjusted somewhat in the last two rounds, but the Russian’s lead was too great by then. Bronze medals: Seok Hwan Jo (South Korea), Vitali Tajbert (Germany)
