Olympic Update: Middleweight Dirrell Advances

On the first day of Olympic boxing, Andre Dirrell was the only American to see action. He put in a strong performance and defeated Ha Dabateer of China by the score of 25-18. According to Associated Press reports, the southpaw Dirrell won with effective counterpunching. Only the middleweight and lightheavyweight divisions saw action in Athens on Saturday, and the American representative at light heavy, Andre Ward, got a first-round bye. Dirrell, America's middleweight, now advances to the round of sixteen, but he will have about a week off until his next bout.
