Flyweight: Gamboa (Cuba) defeats Thomas (France). Quick-footed Yuriorkis Gamboa captured Cuba’s first gold
medal of the games with a 38-23 decision over Jerome Thomas of France. Gamboa was too fast for Thomas. He appeared
to throw his shoulder into Thomas’ jaw every time the boxers clinched, but to the Cuban's credit, he spent part of
the last round trading punches with Thomas when he could have been protecting his lead. Thomas now has a sliver to
go with the bronze medal he won in Sydney, a feat largely overshadowed by the gold medal performance of another
Frenchman, Brahim Asloum. Bronze medals: Rustam Rahimov (Germany), Fuad  Aslanov (Azerbaijan)
