Oleksandr Gvozdyk retires at 33

Oleksandr Gvozdyk has retired from boxing. He won a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics as part of an incredible Ukrainian team that included Oleksandr Usyk abd Vasiliy Lomachenko. As a pro, he went 26-1 (which includes the World Series of Boxing). In 2018, he won the WBC light heavyweight championship, ending the career of Adonis Stevenson. He made one successful defense then lost a unification bout vs. Artur Beterbiev, a fight in which Gvozdyk took a lot of punishment. He never fought again, and there were whispers that he suffered an injury worse than the reported concussion. Gvozdyk's promoter, Bob Arum, confirmed the retirement and paid tribute to the former champion, saying, "Gvozdyk debuted as a pro on the Pacquiao-Bradley 2 card, and it has been an honor to promote him since that night. Total class, and a hell of a champion both in and out of the ring. Our entire Top Rank family wishes him nothing but the best now in retirement." Boxingtalk joins Arum's sentiments.
