Niida retains WBA minimiumweight title

Yutaka Niida W12 Ronald Barrera... By defeating Ronald Barrera on Saturday, Yutaka Niida of Japan showed that, along with Ivan Calderon, he is one of the top twwo 105-pound boxers in the world. Unfortunately, there is little incentive for Niida and Calderon to fight each other and decide a true world minimumweight chaampion. Niida recovered from a slow start and relied on a flurry of lefts in the late rounds at Tokyo's Korakuen Hall. Judges scored the match 116-112, 115-113 and 117-111.  Niida is now 20-1-3 with the only loss coming by split decision. Barrera, from Colombia, never beat a legitimate contender and really had no credentials to fight for a world title. He drops to 14-2-1. source: Associated Press
