Nevada official Herb Santos passes away

The WBC reports that Herb Santos, a Nevada ring official, has passed away. Santos was a prominent Reno, Nevada attorney, boxing judge and Nevada Athletic Commissioner. The WBC reports that Santos was a prominent boxing judge for more than 40 years. He began judging amateur boxing in the 1970s and has since been a part of more than 700 professional bouts. He had the opportunity to judge fights involving legends such as Roy Jones, Mark Breland, Michael Carbajal, Wilfredo Gómez, Lennox Lewis, Badou Jack, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, Ray Leonard and  Larry Holmes. From 1985 to 1988, he served as commissioner of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, appointed by then-Governor Richard Bryan. He served as chairman of the commission from the fall of 1987 to the fall of 1988.
 
Before becoming a boxing judge, Herb was stationed in the United States Air Force in Reno, Nevada and also served in the United States Navy. He also advocated for new safety measures in the sport and greater contractual protections for boxers.
