Motor City Hitman wins by TKO

According to the Associated Press, former multi-division champion Thomas Hearns scored an eighth-round knockout of John Long in Detroit on Saturday. Hearns started slowly but scored a fifth-round knockdown to run his career record to 60-5-1. It was Hearn's fight since losing to Uriah Grant in 2000.  Long, 11 years younger than the 46-year-old Hearns, was unable to continue after eight rounds.  Hearns was ahead 79-72 on all three judges' cards at the time of the stoppage. Years ago, it would have seemed impossible for Long to last eight rounds against Hearns, who once knocked Roberto Duran cold inside two. On the same show, Hearns' son Ronald improved to 7-0 with a first-round knockout of Donald Adams. -Scott Shaffer
