The ending was dramatic as a Mosley left knocked Mayorga out just before the final bell sounded. Mosley, now 45-5, was fighting for the first time since losing a close decision to welterweight Miguel Cotto last November. In the early rounds, Mayorga was able to dictate the style of the fight, and rough-and-tumble style benefited the stronger but cruder Nicaraguan. Mosley's undeniable talent soon became the controlling factor in the middleweight bout, as Mosley peppered Mayorga with crisp, clean punches that left Mayorga unable to do anything but challenge Mosley to throw more. Mayorga, 29-7-1, tired as the rounds wore on, and by the eighth, he was throwing very few combinations. Still, Mayorga landed enough hard punches of his own to keep Mosley from getting too aggressive and also to keep it interesting for the fans. Mosley would not let the judges decide the winner, as he turned up the heat in the twelfth round, knocking Mayorga down twice in the final twenty seconds.
