Mormeck is now king of the cruiserweights

Jean Marc Mormeck became the first true world champion in the cruiserweight division since Evander Holyfield moved up to heavyweight in 1988. In an excellent performance, Mormeck withstood a furious start by Braithwaite and patiently waited for his chance to turn the tide. When the opportunity arose, the muscular Mormeck capitalized by flooring Braithwaite in the seventh with a right to the temple.  The pace slowed in the later rounds, but by then, Mormeck was clearly the stroner puncher in control of the bout.  Braithwaite had a point deducted for holding in the eighth round, but staged a brief rally later the same round that saw him land a flurry of clean punches. But Mormeck reestablished control and seemed to hurt Braithwaite in the last round. Braithwaite briefly clowned around in the last round when he should have been trying to knock out Mormeck.  It was Braithwaite's first pro loss. The scorecards seemed a bit too close, with Mormeck winning only by scores of 114-112, 115-111 and 116-110. Many pundits were surprised by the outcome, but not the Boxingtalk ratings, which had Mormeck rated #1 all along. Mormeck now adds the WBC belt to his WBA title, and deserves general recognition as the world champion.  However, in fairness to Johnny Nelson, it should be mentioned that he has held the WBO belt since 1999.  (Be sure to check our predictions column below to see which Boxingtalk staffer predicted the outcome correctly) source: Showtime
