Moises Fuentes dies from boxing related injury

The WBC announced the death of former champion Moises Fuentes (25-7-1) who passed away this week, apparently from boxing injuries suffered last year. From Mexico City, Fuentes turned pro in 2007. He won the WBO 105-pound title in 2011, defeating Raul Hirales Garcia by split decision. His second title defense was a career-best win, a technical knockout that retired Puerto Rican legend Ivan Calderon. That win cost Fuentes the title, however, because he was less than a pound over the minimumweight limit. Fuentes moved up to 108 pounds, fighting Filippino legend Donnie Nietes to a draw in the Philippines. In 2013, Fuentes topped Omar Salado for an interim title but lost a rematch to Nietes the following year. He lost subsequent title shots at 108 and 112 pounds, and seemingly retired after two knockout losses in 2018. Sadly, on October 16, 2021, he made an ill-advised comeback at super flyweight vs. undefeated David Cuellar. Fuentes suffered a violent knockout loss, with his head crashing hard against the canvas. The WBC reports he suffered a resulting blood clot on his brain. He underwent emergency surgery in Cancun and was transferred to Mexico City to receive care and rehabilitation.Fuentes fought bravely for over a year, but unfortunately he lost his life this on Thursday. Boxingtalk joins the WBC in sending our deepest and most sincere condolences to Fuentes' family and many friends.
