Hearing is Scheduled for Today in Reno Nevada
Nevada super middleweight Joey Gilbert tested positive for five banned substances, including methamphetamine (a steroid) and amphetamines, after a defeat of Charles Howe two months ago. Gilbert's record now stands at 16-1 with 12 KOs. When Gilbert’s B sample was tested by Quest Diagnostics, a lab based in Las Vegas and San Diego, the positive for amphetamines was confirmed but no methamphetamine was present. The results of the other substances are not yet reported. Although the B sample is still consistent with the original findings for amphetamines, the discrepancy in the B test calls into question the reliability of the laboratory's work as a whole. Nevada State Athletic Commissioner Executive Director Keith Kizer believes that the commission will still enforce discipline regarding the other drugs found in Gilbert’s system but he did say, "If there's any doubt, the tie should go to the fighter." There is a hearing scheduled for today at 9am in which Gilbert will ask for a continuance in his disciplinary hearing so he can sort out the developing facts. Source: Reno Gazette Journal and Nevada Appeal Â
