Former WBA featherweight champion Derrick "Smoke" Gainer has informed Boxingtalk.com that he will now be trained by 2002 Trainer of the year Buddy McGirt after twelve years of being trained by Alton Merkerson. McGirt will train Gainer and accompany him to Indonesia, along with attorney Kurt Emhoff and Boxing Promoter Gary Shaw. Gainer is slated to face WBA featherweight champ Chris John on April 22.
