McCall to face Gomez in Germany!

Bull versus Panther!

PRESS RELEASE: Bull or Panther? An intriguing heavyweight duel between „Black Panther“ Juan Carlos Gomez (Hamburg/Cuba) and former world heavyweight champion Oliver McCall (USA; „The Atomic Bull“) is set for October 15 at Düsseldorfer Mehrzweckhalle (ZDF live). The two fighters will square off on the undercard of the WBC light heavyweight championship between champion Tomasz Adamek (Poland) and Thomas Ulrich (Berlin), his mandatory challenger. The winner is set for a future title shot at the champion of the World Boxing Council, currently Dr. Vitali Klitschko.

Juan Carlos Gomez was holding the WBC cruiserweight title from 1998 through 2001 and defended it ten times before he vacated his crown in order to climb to the heavyweight division where he is currently ranked number nine.

His opponent Oliver McCall, currently ranked WBC number four, is one of the most colorful persons in heavyweight boxing. The 39-year-old McCall, 45-8 (32), became world champion when he knocked out Lennox Lewis in the second round of their fight in September of 1994. In their rematch in February of 1997 he was defeated by Lewis in a fight with a highly bizarre ending. McCall has defeated among others Lennox Lewis, Larry Holmes, Bruce Seldon, Oleg Maskaev and Henry Akinwande.

In 2005 McCall has fought four times scoring four wins.

Southpaw Juan Carlos Gomez (32) is known for being one of the best technicians worldwide and many experts see him on his way back to a world title.

After getting past a lot of private confusions and an “excurse” to the American boxing market he returned to Universum Box-Promotion and early this year continued training with his new coach Michael Timm at the Universum-gym in Hamburg.

“Juan is dancing again”, coach Timm said.

Gomez’ record stands at 39-1 with 33 knockouts. At heavyweight he defeated among others Sinan Samil Sam, David Defiagbon and Alfred Cole.

The clash between Gomez and McCall continues the currently ongoing duels between fighters from the stables of Universum and Don King. On September 28 in Hamburg Lamon Brewster, world champion off the Don King stable, came from behind to knock out his German mandatory challenger Luan Krasniqi in a highly dramatic fight.

On the same show Universum prospect Alexander Dimitrenko defeated Vaughn Bean.

McCall, like Brewster and Bean, is promoted by Don King.
