Maywood, CA show to benefit Contreras

PRESS RELEASE: This Saturday night at the Maywood Activity Center in Maywood, California, Giovanni Segura will defend his California state flyweight title.  For every ticket sold, promoter Ray Alcorta promises that five dollars will go to Ruben Contreras, who fell into a coma after his fight with Brian Viloria a few weeks back at the Staples Center. "The benefit is going to a good cause, the Ruben Contreras Foundation," explained Alcorta. "As you know, the guy was hurt in his last fight. Nobody knows why, I think it was an injury that he came in with. The family's here, he comes from a poor family in Mexico and everybody has written and only talked about the bad stuff. I know Gary Gittelsohn and Top Rank are taking care of a big part of the medicals and his family's needs for right now," Alcorta says of Viloria's manager and Bob Arum's company, which promoted the May 28th show where Contreras was injured. "But I think there's more things [that Contreras will need]." Also scheduled to appear on the show are heavyweights Damian Wills and Sedreck Fields in separate bouts.
