Mayweather dominates Bruseles

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. won virtually every round against Henry Bruseles until Bruseles' corner asked the referee to stop the junior welterweight contest just before the end of the eighth round in Miami, Florida.  Mayweather, now 33-0, knocked Bruseles down with a right to the body with about a minute to go in the eighth. Determined to close the show, Mayweather turned up the heat on Bruseles and floored him again about 45 seconds later. Bruseles was ready to continue but his corner had seen enough and the bout was stopped.  Mayweather's dominance was reflected in Compubox's Punchstat totals,  219-82.  Mayweather is rated #2 in his weight class by Boxingtalk and #3 on this site's pound for pound list.  Mayweather could be in line for a bout against Arturo Gatti, provided Gatti wins his bout next week and Mayweather can navigate his way through pending criminal charges.

On the undercard, Samuel Peter continued his rapid ascent up the heavyweight ladder by knocking down Yanqui Diaz five times en route to a fifth-round stoppage. Peter was penalized two points for deliberately hitting Diaz while he was on the canvas, but when you have punching power like Peter, the scorecards rarely matter.  Peter is now 22-0 and is due for a bump up from his current #20 position in the Boxingtalk ratings.  Diaz suffered just his second pro loss . He is currently rated #30 by Boxingtalk under his given name, Yamplier Azcuy. --Scott Shaffer
