Former five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather announced on social media that he will face Australia's Matty Floyd on December 19th in Bangkok. No additional details were provided concerning the rules, scheduled number of rounds or broadcast details, if any. Mayweather also indicated that the exhibition will serve as preparation for a potential showdown with WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia in February 2027, although any claims of Mayweather vs. Garcia should be taken with a grain of salt. "This is a lil tune up before me and Ryan Garcia lock up Feb. 2027," Mayweather wrote on Instagram. Matty Floyd is credited with a 15-2 record and fights around the light heavyweight division. But after a low-level loss, he has veered off the traditional boxing path, losing a 2025 bare knuckles fight to ex-super middleweight champ James DeGale and then winning a 2026 Misfits crossover exhibition against Anthony Taylor.
Mayweather, age 49, retired from professional boxing in 2017 with a 50-0 record following his tenth-round stoppage of UFC star Conor McGregor. Since then, the Hall of Famer is reputed to be in financial difficutlies and has participated in a series of exhibitions against opponents from both inside and outside the boxing world. The December event is being promoted as "Australia vs. The World" and "The Goat vs. The Jedi," referring to the nicknames of Mayweather and Matty Floyd.
