Mayweather's Attorney Optimistic About Gatti Fight!

Floyd Mayweather's decision to plead no contest in Grand Rapids, Michigan may not have been such a bad move after all.  One of his attorneys is optimistic that Mayweather will still be able to challenge Arturo Gatti on June 11 in Atlantic City. Since breaking the news that Mayweather pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery charges yesterday, Boxingtalk has acquired additional information concerning the plea.  According to Mayweather's attorney, Todd R. Perkins, when Mayweather failed to show up for a scheduled trial, he was charged with misdemeanor escape. As it is indisputable that Mayweather had notice of the court date failed to appear, there was virtually no defense to the charge, which carried the potential of an additional three months of jail time. According to Perkins, the escape charge was dropped as part of the plea agreement.  Perkins, who practices criminal defense and entertainment law in Michigan, said that although the judge will have the final say at the March 11 sentencing hearing, prosecutors will not push to send Mayweather to prison. "They will take no position as to jail time," Perkins said on Tuesday, noting that the charge carries a maximum of 93 days in jail, "and we are confident that this will be resolved without affecting Floyd's opportunity to pursue other fights, including Arturo Gatti in June." Perkins added that the civil suit related to the assault should be resolved soon.  Remember where you heard it first! (3:50 PM ET)
