Boxingtalk scores it 114-113 for Maske
Henry Maske - 10 years after sustaining his only loss to Virgil Hill - exacted a measure of revenge Saturday, winning a unanimous 12-round decision over his old American rival before a raucous, home crowd in Munich. Maske, known as "Gentleman" Henry, won by scores of 117-110, 116-113 and 117-110. Looking sharp and fit after a decade in retirement, Maske, the IBF light heavyweight champion from 1993-96, used superb counterpunching skills to offset Hill's aggression. The German's stiff, southpaw jab created several style problems for Hill, the WBA regular cruiserweight champion whose title was not on the line [Editor's note: the WBA super champion, Jean Marc Mormeck is generally recongized as the legitimate world champion]. Everytime the American tried to close the distance, Maske simply popped him with the jab and moved out of the way, showing surprising agility, even at the age of 43. Hill appeared to take the early lead, connecting to Maske's body. But, slowly, Maske's boxing ability and height and reach advantages began to come into play. He appeared to take the middle rounds - five, six and seven - before controversy erupted.
Hill sustained a nasty gash on his forehead during an exchange, falling to the canvas in obvious pain. Maske was deducted a point, though the headbutt appeared accidental. Hill continued to fight, but was hampered by the wound. From there, Maske appeared to take three of the last four rounds, which proved the difference in a tactical fight, and paying Hill back for the only loss of his career, a decision on Nov. 23, 1996, also in Munich. Boxingtalk scored the fight 114-113 for Maske. Hill, also 43 and a native of Bismarck, N.D., fell to 50-6 (23 KOs), while Maske, perhaps a player in the cruiserweight division again, improved to 31-1 (11 KOs). source: ppv broadcast
