Maskaev stops Rahman with just :43 remaining

Oleg Maskaev TKO12 Hasim Rahman... Oleg Maskaev, who was considered a shot fighter a few years back, put up a much tougher battle than expected against Hasim Rahman in Las Vegas on Saturday, and he came away with an upset victory to claim one fourth, the WBC portion, of the heavyweight title.  After a close fight, Maksaev landed several big punches that led to referee Jay Nady stopping the fight in the twelfth round with Raham virtually out on his feet. Maskaev was awarded the win by technical knockout after having put Rahman down once earlier in the round. There were just 43 seconds remaining in the fight at the time of the stoppage. Maskaev beat Rahman once before, in 1999, but three losses in 2000-2002 had the boxing world writing him off as finished. He can enjoy the last laugh now. Although Bob Arum promoted the fight as Rahman defending America's honor against the former Soviet Union, Maskaev is an American citizen who will bring the title back to his residence in Staten Island, New York, not Kazakhstan, his place of birth.
