Marlen Esparza loses title on the scales

Marlen Esparza (pictured) lost the WBA flyweight title on the scales. She failed to make the 112-pound weight limit today (Friday). However, she will still step into the ring to face Celeste Alaniz this Saturday but only the Argentinean will have the eligibility to leave the ring as a champion. Esparza weighed in at 114.2 pounds on the scales, considerably above the 112 weight regulations. Alaniz weighed in at 111.4 and will be the only one with the option to fight for the championship. WBA rules dictate that “If the champion does not make the limit weight of the division after the two (2) additional hours granted, [she] will lose the title. If the challenger makes the weight and wins the bout, [she] shall be declared champion. If the champion who did not make the weight is the winner of the bout, the title will be declared vacant.”
