Makabu controversially edges Mchunu to keep Canelo hope alive

Ilunga Makabu W12 Thabiso Mchunu ... In Warren, Ohio, Ilunga Makabu retained the WBC cruiserweight title, defeating Thabiso Mchunu by split decision. The official scores were 116-112 and 115-113 for Makabu and 115-113 for Mchunu. Former champion Ray Mancini, serving as the pay-per-view commentator, favored Mchunu (29-6) on his own card. Makabu (23-2) will now wait to see if he gets a life changing call, as boxing's biggest super star, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is considering moving up to cruiserweight to challenge Makabu. Makabu has now beaten Mchunu twice, having previaled in a 2015 encounter.

“Today I did not come for the knockout. I just came to prove that I can box. I am going to box and beat Canelo in my next fight,” said Makabu who has now won ten fights in a row.

“We were leading the fight comfortably,” Makubu’s trainer Damien Durandt claimed. “Junior Makabu boxed wonderfully. We knew what Mchunu was about. He brought some things that surprised us. I told Junior not to go for the knockout. If he comes, we’ll take it. All he wanted were points.”
