PBC shows expected in Long Island in July, Barclay's in August
GL: What's good Lou? Top Rank is making believe that Terence Crawford is going to a dance recital on Saturday night and most people don't realize he's in a real tough fight. But he's in a real tough fight and Felix Diaz is going to give him hell. I'm more interested in talking about Thursday night in Brooklyn at the Paramount Theater of Long Island University across the street from Junior's. It's the return of Broadway Boxing with Heather Hardy in the main event. She's going to make a big announcement on Thursday night in the arena. Charles Conwell, who is a good a prospect as there is coming out of the Olympic team, in my mind he's on the same level as Shakur Stevenson. This is not a second tier guy, he's a gold standard, future world champion type of prospect. He's fighting a 3-1 kid and making his New York debut in his second pro fight. I co-promote him with Tony Holden. Conwell is going to be on the card and then there's a really good fight with Nikluas Flaz, Noel Murphy who is really improving with each fight, he's on the card and he's on the upswing. There hasn't been a Broadway Boxing in a long time. Insurance costs are high, it's one of the reasons these cards are not ten fight cards like they normally would be, but it's an opportunity to see some real talent, to see Heather in a fight, to see Conwell make his New York debut, so I'm really looking forward to it and I want people to come out. By the way it's also my birthday, I'm going to be celebrating my birthday that night, so I'm not driving I'm taking an uber, so if you want to pass by the bar and have a drink with me, please do. It's also Meredith Greenberg's from my office's birthday so it's going to be a birthday celebration also.Â
GL: Will Broadway Boxing be sustainable moving forward? What made you decide to do this show?
Lou DiBella: "I just wanted to do the show and I did it for Heather and because I wanted Conwell to fight in New York. He's in New York, I'm in New York, his manager is in New York. I wanted to showcase Conwell. Heather is going to make an announcement, but she wasn't going to be available for a little while so I wanted her to have more activity. Her last fight, the way the circus worked and the timing worked nobody saw her fight, so she's fighting Edina Kiss again. It was a weird sort of scenario the last time because the fighters got rushed into the ring as they were opening the doors to the arena, so in fairness to both fighters we made the fight again. Heather has something planned and she's going to make a big announcement on Thursday night and then we're going to do something big for her after that. I'm really looking forward to Conwell's pro debut in New York. He's going to be fighting in the New York area with some regularity. Niklaus Flaz is a kid I signed that hasn't fought in New York because we haven't been doing Broadway Boxing. He's a Puerto Rican kid from New York with a lot of relatives here, he's got a lot of talent and big power and we've got him in a tough fight. And Noel Murphy, out of all my kids, he might be the one who has improved the most lately."
GL: When was the last Broadway Boxing in New York prior to this one?
LD: "Over a year ago."
GL: Has the lack of shows on a consistent basis had a negative impact at the box office?
LD: "Yes. I'm not going to sit here and lie to you. I had a whole thing rolling with Broadway Boxing and they've really destroyed local boxing. Joe DeGuardia did a show and they had to do four or five fights also. You can't do a New York club show and afford to load the card. If you're not loading the card, there's fewer ticket sellers on the card, but they don't really care. The insurance costs make it impossible to load cards and it's a shame."
GL: Will there be another Broadway Boxing in New York before the end of the year?
LD: "I expect there will be another one, but I've got to come up with some ideas. There's going to be a lot of Broadway Boxing, just not in New York. There's going to be a sensational Broadway Boxing on June 3 at Foxwoods. There's going to be a number of Broadway Boxing at Foxwoods. Broadway Boxing is going to move around, you're going to see it in other places, but I'm planning to do another one in New York this year, but they don't make it easy for me to do it all."
GL: Has there been any indication that the policy might change to where your series and Joe DeGuardia's series can get back into the full swing of things?
LD: "There's zero indication. I think the Commission doesn't like me because of my level of outspokeness about this, I don't think I'm one of their favorite people."
GL: How could not be one of their favorite people, you've been promoting all of the major PBC events in New York for the last few years?
LD: "Because they laid out a red carpet for MMA in a way that they never have for boxing and they've hurt the boxing industry and I think they would probably prefer my silence. I really would like to see small promoters be able to do their shows, Joe DeGuardia made a big investment into his series, I made a big investment into Broadway Boxing as a New York based series. Other promoters have been forced out of town or forced out of business. I'm pleading with people to come out on Thursday night, come out and support local boxing in New York. The reality is, it's gotten much more expensive to do and it's not out fault, and it's hard to make it work. We're going to have a lot of fun at the Paramount Theater, walk up and buy your tickets, there's going ot be a full bar in there and Junior's is across the street, so get a great corn beef sandwich and then come to the fight. New York boxing needs a hand and it needs a push, believe me nobody is trying to help us."
GL: I've heard that there's going to be a major PBC show in Long Island in July and then another one at the Barclay's in August. What can you tell us about that?
LD: "I think it's fair to say that you get good information, there should be some announcements coming soon that I can't elaborate on right now but I think we're going to have a very active summer. New York area fight fans and Long Island area fight fans are going to be very excited."
GL: Closing thoughts?
LD: "Come out on Thursday night and support Broadway Boxing and have a beer with me for my birthday.Â
