Lorenzo offers to step in for Vargas and face Mayorga

Lorenzo: "Vargas is a shot fighter"

Giovanni Lorenzo was sitting home in his New York apartment after completing his daily roadwork, and before he was able to settle in, his cell phone rang and his manager Richard Ryan was on the other end. Ryan informed his man that the much-anticipated September 8, 2007 bout between Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga has been postponed. Lorenzo was originally slated to be on the undercard of this pay-per-view show. As originally reported by Boxingtalk, Vargas pulled out due to a low red blood cell count, in his system, anemia.  It is said, that when one door closes another one opens and Giovanni "El Chico Malo" Lorenzo is ready to kick the hinges off the door to stardom. The undefeated former Olympian told Boxingtalk, that he is willing to step in place of the ill Vargas, and take on “El Matador.”

"I have been saying all along that Vargas is a shot fighter, this is a disgrace to the sport and the promoters of the show who I'm sure will lose hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars because of this. Mayorga was right all along about this guy, we all know why he pulled out of the fight,” Lorenzo

Lorenzo speculated that Vargas maybe battling the scales more so than anemia. Lorenzo said that it sounds more like an excuse, from the pride of Oxnard.

Lorenzo stated that he is the only fighter in the Main Events stable that is available to fight at the weight of 162.

"We all know that a fight between me and “El Matador” will be a much better fight for the fans than with Vargas. I think our styles would be explosive. I'm am ranked #2 in the WBC, and on the verge of a title fight when Jermain Taylor moves up to 168 after his fight with Kelly Pavlik, I am willing to put all of that on line against Mayorga, so Mayorga has a lot to gain in fighting me,” Lorenzo.

“I have a lot of respect for Mayorga, he talks a lot, but the guy comes to fight and real fighters recognize real fighters. However, I know that it would be a great fight for me, against a great champion. I said a long time ago that I was the best middleweight Main Events had and I’m ready to prove it on September 8th,” Lorenzo.

“Don King is known for making lemonade out of lemons and I have no doubt that Don along with my promoters can do the same thing now. In fact, I know that’s what they are thinking about right at this moment. I will take this fight only under one condition and that is, that "Paquita La Del Barrio" (Vargas), gets to keep his front row seats so he can see what a real fighter looks like,” Lorenzo.
