Locals take a wrong turn in Albuquerque

By Scott Shaffer

Freddy Hernandez TKO4 Anthony Montoya... It was a terrible night for Albuquerque boxing as both featured boxers were stopped in their hometown.  Welterweight Anthony Montoya was never knocked down, but sagged from a Freddy Hernandez punch with about fifteen seconds to go in the fourth. Quite simply, the heavily tatooed Montoya went back to his corner, asked out of the fight, and then broke down in tears a few seconds later. Hernandez is now 18-1, with just a split deicision loss to Golden Johnson.  Montoya falls to 8-1 and needs to take a long look in  the mirror and decide how badly he wants to make it in this tough sport.

Tomas Villa TKO10 David Martinez... Tomas Villa came into Albuquerque, New Mexico, the hometown of previously unbeaten David Martinez to score an upset and did just that, stopping Martinez in the tenth and last scheduled round of their super bantamweight bout.  Martinez, now 13-1-1, wasn't close to going down but he was bleeding and was getting worked over pretty good in the corner by Villa when the referee stopped the fight in the last round. Villa is now 12-5-3. source: Solo Boxeo on Telefutura
