According to the Penascola News Journal, former featherweight titlist Derrick “Smoke” Gainer has been arrested for failing to pay a $4 parking fee at a county fair parking lot. The boxer was charged with theft, a second-degree misdemeanor but perhaps the Escambia County police should provide a more accurate description of his offense, namely “driving while black” as you don’t often hear about people getting arrested over a $4 dispute. Deputies said he refused several times to pay the $4 parking fee at the fair's main parking lot while Smoke claimed he was only dropping off his children. Still, Smoke probably should have just paid the $4 as he wound up having to post a $500 bond in order to be released from jail.
