Liakhovich to shake loose in Canastota!

The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today reigning WBO heavyweight world champion Sergei “White Wolf” Liakhovich will attend festivities planned for the 17th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 8-11th. While in Canastota, Liakhovich will conduct two public workout sessions for the fans. “Sergei Liakhovich is an exciting young star in the heavyweight division,” said Hall of Fame director Edward Brophy. “The fans will really enjoy seeing him work out as he prepares for his first title defense.”

 

Liakhovich will hold public workout sessions at 1 pm on both Friday, June 9th and Saturday, June 10th. The sessions will include heavy bag, speed bag, jump rope and ring work.

 

The super heavyweight Olympic representative for Belarus in 1996, Liakhovich amassed a 145-15 amateur record before turning pro in 1998. Boxing out of Scottsdale, Arizona, the “White Wolf” utilized good offensive skills and impressive body punching to score wins over Everett Martin, Sedreck Fields, Friday Ahunanya, and Dominick Guinn to set up a WBO heavyweight title bout with “Relentless” Lamon Brewster on April 1, 2006. In an exciting 12 round contest, Liakhovich won a unanimous decision to capture the title and raise his pro record to 23-1 (14KOs). Liakhovich is trained by Kenny Weldon.

 

The June 8-11th Hall of Fame Induction Weekend will feature over 20 exciting events including the official induction ceremony honoring the Class of 2006. Living inductees to be honored at the Official Induction Ceremony on Sunday, June 11th are junior flyweight champions Michael Carbajal and Humberto “Chiquita” Gonzalez, historian / publisher Hank Kaplan and manager / promoter Jarvis Astaire. Posthumous inductees will also be honored.

 

Over 50 boxing stars, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Ken Norton, Wilfredo Gomez, Bob Foster, Erik Morales, Emile Griffith, Angelo Dundee, Aaron Pryor, Leon Spinks, Alexis Arguello, and Canastota's Carmen Basilio are scheduled to participate in weekend festivities.
