Late actor Paul Gleason had boxing connection

Actor Paul Gleason, best known for playing the principal in the classic 1980's movie The Breakfast Club, as well as a role in another classic comedy, Trading Places, recently passed away from a lung disease at the age of 67. In addition to being a former minor league baseball player, Gleason had a connection to boxing. Gleason worked with Mike Marley as a former co-manager of a heavyweight who never quite panned out named King Ipitan. Marley fondly remembers Gleason as a fun-loving guy. "Walking through the Mirage one night before Leonard-Duran III," writes Marley, "I was with Gleason when an elderly couple mistook him for casino owner Steve Wynn. Not wanting to disappoint them, Gleason instructed them to call the front desk, ask for the manager and told them their room would be comped and that they would get extra towels. The happy couple thanked 'Mr. Wynn' and asked him to say hello to Mr. Sinatra for them. Gleason was the rare Hollywood guy who actually knew a left hook from a fish hook and a lifelong supporter of boxing. He will be missed." Boxingtalk joins Marley in passing its condolences along to the friends and family of Paul Gleason. --Scott Shaffer
