Karl Dargan wins Pan Am Gold for USA

Cubans fare well despite two defections

In Rio De Janeiro, Karl Dargan made it two gold medals for the United States at the Pan Am Games. Dargan defeated Puerto Rico's Jonathan Gonzalez Ortiz in the light welterweight finals to join Luis Yanez as American gold medalists.  Demetrius Andrade got a silver at welterweight, and  light heavyweight Christopher Downs took home a bronze. Despite having two athletes defect without competing, Cuba still did pretty well, winning five golds, a silver and two bronzes. As there are only eleven weight classes in the amateurs, that means only one Cuban boxer was defeated before the medal round. The host nation, Brazil, did pretty well, winning a gold at welterweight (one of the divisions where the Cuban entrant went AWOL) and six bronzes. The gold medal standings were: Cuba 5, USA 2, and Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Colombia tied with 1.
