Juan Diaz Fails To Make Weight In First Attempt...But Makes It On Second Try

At Thursday's weigh-in in Houston, Juan Diaz shed a half pound and successfully made the lightweight limit of 135 pounds in his second attempt.  Earlier, Diaz failed in his first try to weigh in at 135 or less. Diaz, who holds the WBA title, will face challenger Billy Irwin, who made weight with no problem, tipping the scales at 133.5. In the heavyweight co-feature, veteran Cliff Etienne scaled 223 pounds compared with 226 for his opponent, undefeated Calvin Brock. ESPN2 will televise both bouts beginning at 9 p.m. Meanwhile, in Uncasville, Connecticut, both Chris Smith and David Estrada made weight for tomorrow's IBF welterweight elimination bout to be televised on Showtime. Smith weighed in at 146, Estrada at 147. In the ten-round co-feature, unbeaten junior middleweight Sechew Powell weighed in at 155 for his bout against Patrick Thompson, 152.75. Showtime will televise the DiBella Entertainment doubleheader from the Mohegan Sun Casino at 11 p.m. ET/PT (tape delayed on west coast).
