The WBC reports that former champion Juan “Kid” Meza has died at the age of 67. Meza, who passed away this Thursday, was the first world boxing champion from Mexicali, which is located in the state of Baja California, Mexico. Born on March 18, 1956 in Mexicali, his pro career spanned 1977-1987, with two comeback fights in 1997. His first title bid was a loss to Wilfredo Gomez in 1982. He became the WBC super bantamweight champion by defeating Jaime Garza on November 3, 1984 in Kingston, New York, knocking him out in one round and snatching Garza's undefeated 40-0 record. Garza had one successful a defense, a win over Mike Ayala, before losing his title to fellow Mexican Lupe Pintor. Meza lost a follow up title shot to Pintor's conqueror, Samart Payakaroon in 1986. Meza retired the following year, but came back in 1997 to split two bouts and finish his career at 45-9.
