Jose Luis Lopez wins decision

By Scott Shaffer

Jose Luis Lopez W10 Vinroy Barrett... Jose Luis Lopez has seen better days, and at 157 pounds, the ex-welterweight titlist has looked leaner as well. However, on Friday, he still had enough left to defeat Vinroy Barrett by ten-round decision. Official scores were in 97-92, 98-91 and 96-92 in favor of Lopez, who was docked apoint for hitting on the break in the last round. Lopez is now 48-4-2, including four straight wins following a four-year layoff. The win over Barrett, 21-4, was a step in the right direction, but he must shed those last ten pounds.

Gilberto Venegas TKO4 Steve Vincent... On the same show, Gilberto Venegas showed he is a not-so-young prospect to watch thanks to a four-round dismantling of Steve Vincent. Venegas improved to 9-1-1 when an overmatched Vincent, 8-4, quit after four rounds of punishment. Venegas threw and landed many hard combinations. His lone loss was by split decision in 1999. After four years away from the game, he has won two in a row, both against boxers with good records.
