Jose Cotto too heavy for elimination bout

There will be no IBF junior lightweight eliminator this weekend after Jose Miguel Cotto embarrasingly failed to make weight for a fight in his native Puerto Rico against former featherweight titlist Manuel Medina.  Cotto weighed in at 133 pounds and tried to shed the weight but came back to the scale on 3/4 of pound lighter. Medina, who has fought for many years at 126 pounds, weighed in at 128 and didn't seem interested in fighting, particularly since he is likely to be paid and also elevated to the mandatory spot for the Marco Antonio Barrera-Robbie Peden winner.  If cancelled, the bout will hurt the marketability of a pay-per-view card featuring a WBO 108-pound title fight between Hugo Cazares and the recycled Alex Sanchez, so it seem logical that the promoters will spend the night trying to convince Medina to take the fight as an over-the-weight contest.  Stay tuned. source: El Nuevo Dia
