Johnson-Varela set for July 14

Edited Press Release: Corey "Primetime" Johnson continues his comeback on July 14, 2006 when he fights Jose Varela, 14-2, for a vacant regional junior middleweight belt at the South Coast Casino in Las Vegas. Johnson (33-2-2, 11 KOs) is coming off of a May 5, 2006 second-round TKO of Karl Willis.   "I'm back and better than ever at 154 pounds," the stylish southpaw Johnson said. "I'm much stronger at this weight and all of the experience I've gained over the years will help me school some of these so-called contenders. I've been where they want to go - fighting for the world title." [Editor's note: He was KO'd by Kostya Tszyu in four rounds back in 1996]. Johnson is promoted by Silverhawk Boxing, managed by Rider Boxing, and trained by Henry Hill. Varela, the former Nicaraguan welterweight champion, has been in title fights and lost against the likes of Marco Antonio Rubio (20-1-1) and Edison Miranda (22-0).
