In what is being described as a thrilling, bloody battle, Carl Johanneson retained the British 130-pound championship with a sixth-round stoppage of Michael Gomez in Doncaster, England. Gomez, now 34-8, started very strongly, and by the end of the first round, blood was leaking from Johanneson's nose. Johanneson weathered the first two rounds, and opened a cut over Gomez's eye. In the sixth, Johanneson floored Gomez and continued his assault until the referee stopped the fight. Gomez, a proven warrior, protested the stoppage. Johanneson was stopped in his last fight, a European cjhampionship bid, but he bounced back to up his career record to 27-3. source: the sporting life
