Boxingtalk received a phone call from Freddie Roach this afternoon, informing us that Oscar De La Hoya's longtime cut man, Joe Chavez gave Roach a call and asked if he could assume the head training job for Israel Vasquez. Roach said yes, and wants to put to rest any possible speculation as to what happened. “I got a call from Joe Chavez who asked me if he could assume the head trainer job for Israel Vasquez.” Roach went on to say, “Joe called and said that out of respect for me, he wanted to make sure that it would be ok with me. I told him to go ahead and take the job, that's the way people need to do business with people, with morals.” Roach informed Boxingtalk that former Wild Card conditioning coach Justin Fortune would remain on as Vazquez's conditioning coach. The former 122-pound champ is coming off a stoppage loss to Rafael Marquez, but is scheduled for a rematch in August.
