Joseph Diaz defeated Javier Fortuna to win the interim WBC lightweight title on Friday. The two men squared off on a Golden Boy Promotions show at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. Diaz (32-1-1, 15 KOs) controlled the majority of the action against Fortuna (36-3-1, 25 KOs) with the judges scoring it 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112. After the victory, Diaz said he was ready for anybody in that weight class. “I can fight these guys, I can fight all the top contenders and champions at 135 pounds. Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, let’s make this happen, baby! I’m ready! 135, let’s get it!”
His promoter Oscar de la Hoya added: “JoJo once again showed a lot of guts, a lot of courage, and a big heart. His first fight at 135 was not too shabby. I think he did a great job against a guy who’s been avoided for so many years.”
