Gonzalez takes WBO bantam title
Jhonny Gonzalez practically collapsed with joy after winning the WBO bantamweight title from Ratanachai Sor Vorapin in Tucson, Arizona. Gonzalez put the Thai champion down twice in the second round, and looked to be moments away from ending the bout, but Vorapin showed amazing resiliency and landed just enough punches to keep Gonzalez from moving in for the kill. The bloodied Vorapin tried desperately to keep his title, throwing low blows in addition to head shots, and for a time he was successfull. However, in the sixth, Vorapin was down again and hurt near the end of the round. Gonzalez jumped on him at the start of the seventh and when Vorapin (now 65-9)could not get out of the way, referee Robert Byrd saved him from further punishment. As a teenager, Gonzalez (now 31-4) lost his first two professional bouts. He also lost twice to Chapo Vargas when he was 21 years old. source: HBO Latino
