Jason Estrada wants more fights

Former US Olympian Jason "Big Six" Estrada is coming off of two very impressive back to back wins, (after suffering his first and only defeat) back in November of 2006 to Travis Walker.  Estrada has  only 10 professional fights on his resume since the Olympic games of 2004, and makes it clear in this interview that he wants to be busier.

BC - Big Six you got two nice back to back wins under your belt, talk about your last two fights.

JE - Well , just a lot of hard work and I showed it in the ring.  I was healthy for the camps, no injuries, and it was a great outcome for all of the hard work that I put in.

BC - You have taken a rap about coming into fights not in shape, did suffering your first defeat against Travis Walker light a spark underneath you?

JE - Well I never understood that one, I came into every fight in shape except for my fight against Travis Walker.  I had a few problems in my camp for that fight, I was in decent shape for that fight, but it was hard to carry that weight.  Before that fight I was 242, 243, 241, never over the 240's.

BC - There has been a definite change in your performances over the past few fights though, you have looked the best that I have ever seen you.

JE - I attribute that to great camps, the last two fights that I have had there were no injuries to deal with, I was completely healthy.  I had injury free camps, and that made all of the difference.

BC - I noticed that on your fight resume, most of your opponents have winning records, most amateurs that come into the pro's have soft opponents early, not the case with you though, what's up with that?

JE - I just feel that when you fight better fighters it makes you a better fighter in the long run.  Guys that fight cushy fighters early, then have to get into a fight with a real fighter, they don't know what to do.

BC - I heard you will be working with Tony Thompson.

JE - Yea, yea I have worked with him before and that's great work.  Tony is a southpaw, and he's bigger than I am.  I worked with him when he was getting ready to fight Dominick Guinn.

BC - You only have 10 fights since coming out of the Olympics, what's up with that?

JE - Yes, I feel that I should have more fights than that by now.  It's the way things go sometimes, there are some bumps with my promoter, and were working it out.  I don't like to sit around, I wanted to get at least 2 more fights before the year is over, and hopefully I can.

BC - Has your father and yourself approached Jimmy Burchfield about this?

JE - Yea, we talked to him about it but it has to happen.  Talk is talk, we just want something to happen.

BC - Jason what is your game-plan, where do you want to be in a years time?

JE - I just want to work, I am working regardless in the gym because if I get a call to fight, I will be ready.  I can't really say what the future holds, I just hope everything goes right.  I just want more fights, that's all.

BC - It doesn't sound like you have a money issue here, you just want to be busier.

JE - Well the money will come with more fights, you know?  If you only have 10 fights since 2004, how am I going to get money fights?  Hopefully things will start picking up.  My only goal right now is to get more fights.

BC - 10 fights isn't a very impressive amount of fights since 2004, but with that said, what has been the biggest change for you since coming out of the amateurs?

JE - To learn how relax in there more.  To realize that the pro rounds are longer.. I remember my first pro fight, I was still thinking it was short round and I was throwing a million punches.

BC - Any closing thoughts?

JE - Keep it tuned to Boxingtalk!
