Jalolov wins super heavyweight gold to punctuate Uzbeki Olympic dominance

Uzbekistan dominated the men's side of the Olympic boxing slate, winning gold in five of the seven weight classes. Bakhodir Jalolov has retained his Olympic title as he battled to gold in the Olympic men’s super heavyweight boxing final in Roland-Garros Stadium on Saturday. Jalolov dominated Spain’s Ayoub Ghadfa to win his second Olympic gold medal after his hand was raised in victory at Tokyo 2020. Abdumalik Khalokov won gold in the men’s featherweight category with a victory by points over Munarbek Seiitbek Uulu from Kyrgyzstan. Jalolov and Khalokov joined Lazizbek Mullonjonov (heavyweight), Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev (welterweight) and Hasanboy Dusmatov (flyweight), crowned earlier this week, as Uzbekistani Olympic champions for 2024.

In the end, it was the larger, hungrier Jalolov who came out on top, securing a one-sided win against a gallant but outclassed Ghadfa. “This is history for Uzbekistan, and I’m emotional because becoming a two-time Olympic champion was my dream," said Jalolov after his win. "Now, I feel very happy, and I will continue my career as a professional boxer.”

Ghadfa was proud of his performance but disappointed that he could not fulfil his long-held dream of becoming Olympic champion. “I want Olympic gold. If I stay an amateur I’m going to fight for it. If I turn pro, I want to be world champion. I know that sounds big and it’s impossible. But nothing is impossible, you have to fight for it and follow your dreams.”

At featherweight earlier this week, Charlie Senior from Australia and Javier Ibanez Diaz from Bulgaria earned bronzes after losing in the semi-finals to today’s finalists.
