Interview: Kevin "Kingpin" Johnson

Heavyweight prospect back in action on Dec. 5th

Whenever Kevin "Kingpin" Johnson steps into the ring, his plan is to not make a statement, his plan is to make history.  He is one of the promising heavyweights climbing the ranks, and he believes he can become the undisputed heavyweight champion.  The Star Boxing promoted Johnson climbs his next rung up the ladder on December 5, 2007 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Florida. He recently spoke with Boxingtalk about what we can expect to see from him next week, what he plans to do to his opponent, and what he feels about some of the other promising heavyweights making a name for themselves.

BT:  Kevin, as 2007 draws to a close, how do you feel this past year went for you and your career?

Kevin Johnson:  Everything went well.  I had a lot of activity and I have more activity coming up.

BT:  When can we expect to see you in the ring next?

KJ:  December 5th at Hard Rock Hotel in Florida.

BT:  Do you know who your opponent is yet?

KJ:  No, but whoever I fight, may God rest his soul.

BT:  Your last three opponents have taken you the distance.  Do you feel this is because you are stepping up in competition with each fight?

KJ:  It’s not just that I’m stepping up, but Star Boxing goes in there and finds guys who are tough enough to go the late rounds.  Kevin Johnson knocking a guy out in the first round is not impressive.  I’m not looking at the short time picture, I’m looking at the big picture.

BT:  If you get the call, are you ready to go for the title in your next fight?

KJ:  I was born ready.

BT:  With up-and-coming heavyweights like Chris Arreola and “Fast” Eddie Chambers making a scene in the heavyweight division, where do you feel you rank amongst them?

Kevin Johnson:  I take nothing away from them.  I think we’re the only three guys that actually belong where we’re at.

BT:  What statement would you like to make in your next fight that will prove you’re one to be reckoned with?

Kevin Johnson:  I’m not trying to make a statement right now.  I’m still waiting to make a statement.  You’ll see me make history, and you’ll see me grab three titles.  I don’t want four titles, just three.  I like odd numbers better than even numbers.

BT:  What can we expect from you in 2008?

Kevin Johnson:  The world will lose their shoes.  We’re working on big things.  In the heavyweight division there will be people who make it to the top, but they won’t win.  I have to have Plan A, B, C, and D.  My biggest plan hasn’t been revealed yet.  When you see my plan you’ll see power.
