Hector Camacho Sr. Bout Postponed

PRESS RELEASE: Hector “Macho” Camacho, Sr. announced that his rematch with Chris Walsh, scheduled for January 21, 2004 has been postponed.  The ex-champ admits to a "lapse in judgment" that led to his arrest on burglary charges but today he issued a statement denying any involvement with drugs. Camacho’s attorney, David Morrison of Biloxi, Mississippi released the following statement: “The room at the Imperial Palace, in Biloxi, where Camacho was arrested, was not under Mr. Camacho’s name.  He was simply a guest, using the restroom, when he was arrested.  The drugs were found in the room at the hotel, and did not belong to Mr. Camacho.”

“As to the burglary charge, Mr. Camacho had purchased a laptop computer from his business neighbor, ZDI Computer Center, of Gulfport, which is owned by Solomon and Samantha Wheeler.  The computer was not operating properly and returned to ZDI for repair.  In a drunken state, and by his own admitted foolishness, he attempted, late at night, to retrieve his computer, causing some damage to the Wheelers’ business.”

“Camacho readily admitted his poor judgment, promptly informed the Wheelers of his actions, and apologized for the inconvenience he had caused to them.  He also offered to make restitution for the damage that the Wheelers had incurred. Camacho made a concerted effort to right the unfortunate results of his actions.  The Wheelers’ demand for a half-million dollars ($500,000.00) is outrageous. We will not succumb to such an outlandish and unreasonable demand.”

Morrison added: “Hector has been a resident of South Mississippi since early 2004.  He loves the Mississippi Gulf Coast and wishes to apologize to its residents, the fans, and the boxing community for his momentary lapse in judgment.”

Camacho offered this comment:  “I am truly sorry for any embarrassment that the recent charges against me may have caused.  I respect and trust the people of Mississippi and all of my fans, and hope that they have not lost respect and faith in me.”

Lisa Terlizzi, Camacho’s manager, added:  “The people of Mississippi and around the world deserve to be given accurate information.  Hector loves the Gulf Coast and the people of Mississippi.  They welcomed him with open arms and he moved there because of their Southern hometown hospitality.  Hector never meant to hurt or disappoint anyone.”

Terlizzi concluded:  “Hector remembers his difficult childhood and, as a result, has aided numerous charities, over the past twenty years, some of which include:  The New York City Police and Fire Department 911 Victims Fund; The Make a Wish Foundation; Fight for Children; The ASPCA; New York Children’s Hospital; The New Jersey PBA; F.I.S.T.; The Retired Boxers Foundation; The Police Athletic League; The Boys Club of America, and countless others.”

“Part of the proceeds from Camacho’s upcoming fight, scheduled for January 21, were to benefit local Mississippi charitable organizations.  The fight has been temporarily postponed.”
