Haymer targets Spartacus-Oakey winner

English Light-Heavyweight Champion Peter Haymer is out to erase the painful memories of his last fight when he takes on Paul David at ExCeL London in Docklands this Friday.

The Enfield-based boxer, who trains out of Tottenham, appears on the Hennessy Sports ‘SENI:BOX’ promotion headlined by the clash for the vacant British Light Heavyweight Title between Spartacus and Tony Oakey.

Haymer hopes to secure a challenge against the winner and would be confident of victory, having recorded wins over both.

But first Haymer, 28, wants to put in a good display after being stopped in two by Ovill McKenzie for the Commonwealth crown in September.

“The British title is the next level up for me and that is what I want to be fighting for next,” said Peter.

“I have beaten both Oakey and Spartacus so would be confident of fighting either of them.

“The winner of their fight will probably face Brian Magee next, but I would love to be involved in the future and if I keep plugging away I’m sure I will.

“I’m coming off a poor performance against McKenzie. It was stopped on cuts and I was put down by some poor shots. It just wasn’t me in there so I want to redeem myself and put things right in this next fight.

“I can’t afford to lose this one and need to look good to get back in contention for the big fights again.

“I know I’m good enough for the British Title – the last fight was just a one-off bad night – and I’m just waiting for my chance to show people what I can do at that level. Remember, I’ve beaten Oakey and Spartacus before.”
